81 years ago today on 20 Nov 1944 #jamaica became the first predominantly Black country in the world to attain universal adult suffrage; every adult now had the right to vote for their political representatives regardless of sex, race, creed, or wealth. The right had previously been restricted to property owners. Jamaica was the fourth country in the British Empire, after the UK, New Zealand, and Ceylon, to attain this status. Canada and Australia did not extend the vote to indigenous and aboriginal people until 1960 and 1967 respectively. #caribbean
